Virtual Life / Work Portfolio of Ron Irvine
Life / Work Portfolio
"Life/work" portfolio expresses my philosophy of
"career". A career is all of the productive and
creative activity a person does throughout life
(whether paid or unpaid). In this sense, life, work,
and the person become a seamless, integrated
whole. Too often career is thought of only as
one's "job", a money-making activity done in
isolation from the rest of one's life. When this
happens, people tend to leave part of themselves
at home while they are at work. They become a
cog in the machine. Only that piece of self is
allowed to be present that is necessary for the
task. I have a difficult time splitting myself like this.
I prefer to be fully present in every aspect of my
life; whether family, spiritual, work, or leisure. I call
it living an authentic, undivided life.
Virtual Portfolio
The purpose of this portfolio is to provide a virtual
panoramic view of my life/work.
The word "virtual" is used in the sense of a
"virtual image":
virtual image (ver`ch¡-el im’ej) noun: An image
that is stored in computer memory but is too large
to be shown in its entirety on the screen. Scrolling
and panning are used to bring unseen portions of
the image into view. (The Microsoft Bookshelf
Computer and Internet Dictionary; 1998)
This portfolio is designed to be a tool for my own
reflection and development through scrolling,
panning, and scanning the panorama of my life
and work.
For whatever purpose you have chosen to view
this panorama, it is meant to provide a sweeping
overview as well as a view of the particulars.

The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that our aim is too low and we reach it. ~Michelangelo

Above the hand is
~ a flower unfolding in all its beauty and
creativity,
~ a flame burning with compassion and
passion,
~ a dove descending, a representation
of peace and of the Spirit.
What do you see?
The open hand is open both to give
and to receive life's incidental graces.
