Peace on Earth

 

In Hebrew, the concept of “peace” is a much deeper concept than what is conveyed by our English word.

 

The word used is “shalom”, which means,

 

A right relationship to all things

 

*   God (invisible transcendence)

 

*   People (enemies, friends, neighbors, community, family)

 

*   Life (its risks, changes, challenges, possibilities)

 

*   Material possessions (in this age of mass consumption)

 

*   The earth (in this age of limited natural resources and waste through mass consumption)

 

*   The universe (visible transcendence)

 

 

Let there be shalom on earth,

 

And let it begin with me.
